Working in Health
Students test their capabilities at the simulation suite
Partners Porirua health programme has been going for several years. This programme allows students to achieve nationally recognised qualifications in health and consequently gain work placements.
The partnership was initiated by Partners Porirua working with Healthcare New Zealand, and Wellcare Education. The objective was an introduction to working in the health sector for students from the local colleges.
The students spend one day a week gaining practical experience at rest homes and residential care facilities undertaking health based study.
The partners recognised the need to develop the skill base of local youth and develop career pathways to meet future employment needs.
Feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive. Personal testimonies indicate the programme has made a real difference to their attitudes to the elderly and the students have become more focused on work ethics and their future plans.
Of the students graduating from 2010 programme, 10 students were accepted into tertiary health based study including Bachelor of Nursing Pacific, Foundation Education (Health Science), Diploma in Enrolled Nursing and Certificate in Mental Health.
