Reach for the sky Fijian style
"Believe in yourself. The sky is the limit if you are prepared to make sacrifices", was the message delivered by Fijian medical student Ron Manulevu to a group of year 12 and 13 science students from Porirua College.
Ron is a third year medical student studying at Auckland University. He graduated from Otago University with Bachelor of Science degrees and masters then took a policy job before deciding to pursue his long term long dream of becoming a doctor. Ron is a former Aotea College boy and he returns home to spend time with his mum and family as well as undertake part-time work during the holidays. "My Dad passed away unexpectedly in 2007 and it made me realise you never know what the future holds. My parents sacrificed a lot, they put me on the right path and I want to make them proud" said Ron.
Jonathan spoke about other opportunities to further studies saying that he is in the process of working and studying education and policy, part-time.
"Many of the young people we work with do not realise their true potential. Often they have a limited vision about what the future can hold for them" says Partners Porirua manager, Michelle Robinson. "Partners Porirua is all about developing our youth and assisting them to make good career choices. This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to talk to other young men from their community, to hear about their career pathways and challenges that they have faced."
Ron and Jonathan both urged the students to think seriously about the direction they wished to go.
"Use the skills you have. Working in health is a great job, it gives you chances to problem solve and work with people. Many other doors will open for you," said Ron
